Zap2it: ‘One Tree Hill’s’ Robert Buckley on the finale’s shocking ending and returning for Season 8

“One Tree Hill” fans were shocked when the Season 7 finale ended with Clay (Robert Buckley) and Quinn (Shantal VanSanten) both being shot by their crazy stalker, Katie (Amanda Schull). We came so close to a happy ending, too!

Zap2it talked to Buckley at The CW Upfront Presentation in New York City on May 20 to see if we could squeeze some spoilers out of him. He was still celebrating “One Tree Hill’s” 13-episode order for Season 8, especially since the show was on the bubble. In fact, the future of the Tree Hill gang was so uncertain that the cast shot two season finale endings, one to air as a season finale, and the other as a series finale if the drama wasn’t renewed.

Of course, the episode that aired was the season finale, even though the official renewal announcement hadn’t yet come down from the network. “It was kind of an educated guess,” Buckley told us. “A bit of a gamble, actually.” As for the other ending, “You’re going to have to watch the DVDs for that. Bonus footage"

Examiner.com: CW officially announces ‘One Tree Hill’s’ eighth season & what fans can expect in it!

TVGuide: One Tree Hill’s Robert Buckley: “Clay’s Had a Really Rough Year”

Now that One Tree Hill has officially been renewed, fans must wonder: Will madly in love couple Clay (Robert Buckley) and Quinn (Shantel VanSanten) survive this season’s cliff-hanger finale?

After an otherwise happy season-ender, the show ended with stalker Katie (Amanda Schull) gunning Clay and Quinn down. But not to worry: Buckley told TVGuide.com he’s pretty confident he will be sticking around next year.

CW renews Tree Hill, Life Unexpected; Cancels Melrose; Picks up two series

“Now that I’m here, I would feel like a real idiot if Clay didn’t pull through,” Buckley said at the CW’s fall TV presentation Thursday. “Wouldn’t it be the cruelest prank if it ended up that I died in Act 1 of the first episode?”

So what can we expect from the sports agent next season? “I’m sure the ICU would probably be next, and getting out of the hospital would be good,” Buckley said.

The 29-year-old also hopes for less drama for his character in Season 8. “I drowned, I had my entire career destroyed, I got shot — Clay’s had a really rough year,” Buckley said. “I’d like to see Clay get a little bit of a good start because that kid has baggage.”

MTV: ‘One Tree Hill’ Star Robert Buckley Celebrates Renewal News

“One Tree Hill” is the CW’s version of the little engine that could. Every time it looks like the show is about to get canceled, its dedicated and vocal fanbase come to the rescue, demanding another season. Star Robert Buckley (Clay) told MTV News on the green carpet at the CW upfronts on Thursday (May 20) that he didn’t get the news of their renewal for season eight until this week.

“Oh my God! We got picked up. Woo!” he exclaimed, kidding that he just found out on the carpet. “No, I found out on Tuesday morning-ish, and I found out from an Internet website. Just goes to show you the power of the press.”

Earlier this week, Buckley stopped by the MTV Newsroom and revealed that he didn’t believe that Monday night’s episode would be the series finale, even though he still wasn’t sure. “It was funny. I did an interview on Monday, before I went to MTV, and they said, ‘Congrats on your pickup!’ And so, yeah, I found out Tuesday, [even though] Monday people were telling me we were picked up and we weren’t.”

Despite the kind words from fans and the press on Monday, Buckley didn’t want to jinx anything before he got the official word that they’d be back for more drama. “We were about to go into the interview, and I was like, ‘You need to not say were picked up because were not,’ ” he said. “And how awkward would that be?”
